Burgundy is the ideal destination for cycle-tourism. Its famous Tour de Bourgogne by bike proposes a cycle circuit of 800 kilometres suitable for every level of cyclist. Amongst many itineraries, the Tour includes the greenway following the Burgundy canal which links Dijon to Auxerre (215 kilometres). This section has just been labelled “Vélo & Fromages” and will be much appreciated by gourmet cyclists. The perfect opportunity to (re)discover the delicious certified local cheeses of the Côte-d’Or département such as Epoisses, Soumaintrain and Chaource accompanied by an excellent glass of wine.
The Tour de Bourgogne by bike is also known for its Vine Route, a cycle route that goes from Dijon to Santenay and Chalon-sur-Saône, via Beaune. Its 90 kilometres enable cyclists to join the Canal du Centre, the European EuroVelo 6 cycle track which runs from the Atlantic to the Black Sea! The Vine Route will take you through world renowned villages and exceptional vineyards as well as the “Climats”, listed as UNESCO world heritage sites.
Leaving from Beaune, there are two different circuits: one takes you to Santenay, the other Nuits-Saint-Georges. Ideal for beginners and families, they don’t exceed 25 kilometres and on average take about one and a half hours. If you opt for the first itinerary, you will pass by the Château de Pommard, the washhouses of Meursault and the fine mansions of Chassagne Montrachet as well as the 13th century churches of Santenay. If you choose the second itinerary, you will be able to discover the marble quarries of Comblanchien, the Corgoloin châteaux and the famous bell-tower of Nuits-Saint-Georges as you pass by them on your ride.
