The 162th Wine Auction held by Les Hospices de Beaune will remain in the annals of history: with sales amounting to 29 million euros, it has more than doubled the previous record of 2018 (14 million euros). An exceptional occasion revealing growing enthusiasm for this event that drew 800 buyers to Les Halles in Beaune and thousands of fans to the capital of Burgundy wine!
"The Auction is becoming more widely renowned because Burgundy wines, embodying elegance and finesse, have won unprecedented appreciation over the past 10 years," explains Benjamin Maillet, Head Sommelier at L’Hostellerie Cèdre & Spa and a regular attendee of the event. "Though the quantities produced are low, leading to a very significant rise in prices."
Each year, lots of entertainment accompanies this festive weekend: street shows, a traditional folk parade, a gastronomic village, and a semi-marathon through the streets and vineyards of Beaune. Wine merchants in Beaune propose tastings in their cellars, and great vineyards compete in creativity and organize prestige tasting sessions.
"It is also a gathering for the professional world, the chance for wine producers to invite their loyal clients. The general public is not, in fact, admitted to the Auction," notes Benjamin Maillet. Finally, as the wines proposed are very young, the event allows fans to get an idea of the current millesime. And the 2022 vintage is described as "very promising for both the quantity and quality of the wines".
